Golf
Betting golf tournaments around the world, particularly PGA golf tournaments, is something that more and more bettors continue to do. One of the main reasons for golf’s growing popularity is the Tiger Woods factor. Woods is a huge draw to golf and to golf betting. Golf bettors around the world have many tournaments to bet throughout the year, including the Masters, the PGA Championship, The British Open, and the U.S. Open.

Betting Golf Tournaments and Matchups

You as a golf bettor have two main choices when betting a tournament. You can bet on who will win the tournament or you can bet individual matchups. Let me explain what an individual matchup is. It is basically one golfer against another. Here is what it might look like on the betting board.

Ernie Els +200

Tiger Woods -240

In this scenario you would be risking $240 for every $100 you wanted to win on Woods. If you liked Els you would win $200 for every $100 you bet. The matchup is in essence like betting a money line on a game. You are betting one side against another.

If you are going to bet on who will win the tournament then you will be looking at odds ranging from 3-1 to 100-1 or more. Each golfer will have their individual odds and you are betting on one person to win the tournament. These are tough bets. For example, if you like Tiger Woods to win your odds are probably going to be in the range of 3-1 or so. Those are poor odds for such large fields. If you like someone else your odds are going to be 10-1 or more, but there are so many choices it presents a real problem to find just one choice. The other problem you run into is that Woods might still win. When betting golf tournaments most professional gamblers focus on the matchups and that is where we will look as well.

If you are going to bet a golf matchup you first want to consider how the player has done in the past at this tournament. Golf statistics are available at the PGA Tour website and they break it down for each tournament. In addition to past history you also want to look at how the player is currently playing. If you can find a golfer that historically has done well in a particular tournament, and is playing well, you might have a decent bet. The last factor will be value. If someone like Woods or Mickelson is –200 or more against an opponent the value is really not there. You might be better off looking at a matchup where the odds are –150 or less.

Golf betting is similar to other sports betting in that you have to do your handicapping, you have to get good value, and you have to get good odds. If you can keep these three factors in mind then golf betting might be something you want to add to your overall betting menu.
