Limit Texas Holdem Versus No Limit Texas Holdem

If you think Limit Texas Holdem and No-Limit Texas Holdem are played basically the same then what I am about to go over will be a real eye opener. Even though you get the same number of cards and the layout is the same, Limit Holdem is a much different game than No-Limit Holdem. Just because you are good at one doesn’t mean you will be good at the other. In fact, very few players are good at both variations.

If you think Limit Texas Holdem and No-Limit Texas Holdem are played basically the same then what I am about to go over will be a real eye opener. Even though you get the same number of cards and the layout is the same, Limit Holdem is a much different game than No-Limit Holdem. Just because you are good at one doesn't mean you will be good at the other. In fact, very few players are good at both variations.

When people play Limit Texas Holdem there is more of a feel of “let me see the flop” and more chasing going on since most of the time it is only one more bet to call. In No-Limit Texas Holdem chasing and calling a big bet to see the flop is much more dangerous to do. In No-Limit if you make one wrong decision it can cost you all the chips in front of you. In Limit it just costs you one more bet.

In Limit Holdem bluffing doesn't work very well because it is too easy for other players to call if they are chasing down a hand. In No-Limit Holdem bluffing works much better because you can use your chips to put pressure on the other players. You can't do that very often in Limit Holdem. Just because you play well in No-Limit Holdem doesn't mean you will succeed at Limit Holdem, and vice versa. The skills needed for Limit are patience, mathematical knowledge, and discipline. In No-Limit those skills are nice to have, but more important is the ability to read hands, guts, and an understanding of the poker psychology. Some people have compared Limit Holdem to a science and No-Limit Holdem to an art. That is not a bad comparison.

When playing No-Limit Holdem you can lose all of your chips in one hand. That doesn't happen in Limit Holdem, unless your bankroll is small of course. If you like to check raise when playing Holdem it works much better in No-Limit than it does in Limit. Always remember that in Limit Holdem it is just another bet to call, not the entire stack. When playing Limit Holdem position is important, but not critical. In No-Limit position can be the deciding factor between winning and losing. That is just not the case in Limit.

The bankroll swings are definitely larger in No-Limit than they are in Limit. You can win or lose a lot of money on one hand in No-Limit. You don't have quite those swings when playing Limit Holdem. Always remember when playing Limit that you rarely will win without the best hand. You can't force people out of the pot very often. In No-Limit that is not the case. You can sometimes win with nothing if you have the guts to risk a lot of money.

In Limit Texas Holdem you usually need the cards to win, in No-Limit the cards are helpful, but you can sometimes win without them.
